Google to penalise non mobile friendly websites in mobile searches from 21st April

google-to-penalise-non-mobile-friendly-sites-in-mobile-searchFor many years websites were designed to fit 990px wide, so they displayed great on a 1024 x 768 monitor (remember those days!)

As time has gone on screen resolutions have changed and more importantly the way we access the internet has changed, we are now using tablets, mobiles and laptops to access the internet.

This means that websites need to be adaptive or responsive to the device on which they are being viewed.

With this in mind, Googles announcement on the 26th February wasnt really much of a surprise:-

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.

So for users who are searching on a mobile device they will prioritise the users experience between two sites that rank similar, for the user this is a good thing as they can easily read and see the content on the mobile optimised website.

If you are the owner of the other site, then that is not so good as a competitor has just jumped you in the list….

Websites created as static sites without being responsive can be converted to a fully mobile responsive website.

For a few hours work getting your site mobile/tablet friendly is a necessity in 2015 and eliminates the potential of a close rival leap frogging you just because their site has a responsive layout.
